Somernites Cruise celebrates 10 years of cruisin’! September 25, 2010 show will feature an Ultimate Door Prize and rare GM Futurliner!
Somernites Cruise celebrates its tenth anniversary this month and organizers say it has something for everyone. From stepping back in the 1950’s to see a vision of what the future might be like today…to winning an American classic sports car…to finding yourself featured on a national television show, it promises to be one of the biggest and most memorable Somernites Cruise events in history.
“We’re so excited about the September show!” exclaims Somernites Cruise President Ron Tillery. “We have so much planned, it’s just unbelievable. We are showcasing Corvettes as well as giving one away! The GM Futurliner will be on display, special anniversary dash plaques will be given out, and the Lokar Car Show Series TV show crew will be filming at the event.” He added, “This show will really be a step beyond anything we’ve done to date.” The 1953 GM Futurliner that will be on display was part of GM’s Parade of Progress from 1953-1956, which toured the country giving Americans an idea of what the future might hold. This historic vehicle is one of only 12 built, of which only 8 have survived. Of the 8 that survived, this is one of only 4 that has been restored. It is the only GM Futurliner restored back to its original state.
“We are very thankful to Citizens National Bank for sponsoring this exhibit. Without them, it would not have been possible,” says Somernites Cruise Vice President Delvin McClendon. This marks the GM Futurliner’s first visit back to Kentucky since 1954. It is interesting to note that this GM Futurliner’s first stop on the 1953 Parade of Progress was to Kentucky and the University of Kentucky campus. A restored (though not to the original state) GM Futurliner recently sold at auction for $4.1 million dollars. This is truly a once in a lifetime chance to see this icon of GM’s golden years. In celebration of its 10th anniversary, Somernites Cruise is also giving away an Ultimate Door Prize for September, a beautiful 1993 Red Corvette. “What other car show can you attend and possibly win a red Corvette as either an exhibitor or spectator?” ponders Tillery. Each show car through the gate in September will receive one free ticket to go into the drawing for this fantastic prize. Additional tickets will be available to both participants and spectators throughout the show day. For each $5 spent purchasing official Somernites Cruise merchandise or raffle tickets, an additional chance on the Corvette will be given. The drawing for the Corvette will be at 6:00pm on show day. The Winner must be at least 18 years of age and present to win. “The Corvette will have a new owner at the end of the day in thanks to the many sponsors who stepped up for us,” says Tillery.
Other plans for the 10th anniversary show include a special collectible dated dash plaque sponsored by TourSEKY. Lokar Car Show Series TV show will also be visiting Somernites Cruise. They will be at the Show & Shine in downtown Somerset filming for an upcoming episode. The general public will also get a better look at the county’s new judicial center courtyard and landscaping. “We’ve survived the dust and detours for three seasons and we’re looking forward to the public courtyard and increased parking,” Tillery added. The center’s amenities will not be fully available until the 2011 Somernites Cruise season.
McClendon also hinted at other exciting plans for September. “You just never know who or what may show up!!!” he added with a sly grin. Entrance gates open at 1:00pm on September 25th for the Somernites Cruise 10th Anniversary celebration.
